Afghanistan Hit by 6.3 Magnitude Earthquake, 2,000 Lives Lost

A strong earthquake has hit Afghanistan, causing widespread destruction. The Taliban reports that around 2,000 people have tragically lost their lives in the western part of the country.

A powerful earthquake with a magnitude of 6.3 on the Richter scale originated near the Afghan-Iranian border in the west. It has caused a large number of casualties, both in terms of lives lost and injuries.

The Herat province, especially the Jenda Jan district, was hit hardest by this devastating earthquake and its aftershocks. According to Mohammad Abdullah Jan, a spokesperson for the Disaster Authority, the most severe damage occurred in four villages in the Jenda Jan district. The earthquake's epicenter was about 40 kilometers northwest of Herat city.

Following the initial earthquake, the US Geological Survey recorded a series of tremors, including magnitudes of 6.3, 5.9, and 5.5. This ongoing seismic activity has caused widespread devastation, particularly in villages located around 40 kilometers from Herat city. Many buildings have been destroyed, and there are still people trapped under debris, awaiting rescue.

Witnesses have shared distressing accounts of office buildings shaking and, in some cases, collapsing. Abdul Wahid Rayan, a spokesperson for Afghanistan's Ministry of Information and Culture, has stated that the death toll in Herat is higher than initially reported. He has urgently requested immediate assistance, noting that about six villages have been entirely devastated, and hundreds of people are still trapped beneath the debris. An update on the situation reveals that 465 homes have been destroyed, and 135 others have been damaged.

Afghanistan is facing the aftermath of this tragic earthquake, with ongoing rescue and relief efforts to aid the affected communities. The nation is in mourning for the lives lost and is working hard to rebuild these shattered communities in the wake of this natural disaster.
